Thinking about why- going back to the reasons why I spend a good chunk of my time with my camera. It is mostly about observing, using those eyes, and piecing it into the woven tapestry of experiences, dissecting it, highlighting it, drawing from it. Pointing to the pictures, and asking too, what is it beyond the photo? What is the inner eye experiencing? What is the underpinnings of the play of light bouncing off objects, so that we see them and then they are gone. It’s such a dream, an instantaneous string of experiences, that rush along, never stopping for a moment, unless you photograph it, and then it becomes something else. It’s the pause button. Where do you pause, to look, listen and reflect? At this point in history our natural environment is taking a hard hit, from the world of consumerism, fossil fuels, digging up those dinosaurs so we can have more plastic, more stuff, that in actuality, we do not need. I spend as much time as I can outdoors. I live in an expansive forested part of the country that is mostly uninhabited, due to its mountainous terrain, more trees than people. It’s wild out there, as it should be, and knowing that there are less and less places like this, heightens my awareness to place, land and water as it needs to be protected. I also, have a daughter that mirrors back to me a lot of what I see in the world, she also takes center in my observations.
